What is LIVES?

The Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Service (LIVES) is one of the largest volunteer organisations in the UK providing a pre-hospital emergency care service to any person or persons suffering an acute medical problem or injury across the county of Lincolnshire.

calls attended by our members include:

* Road Traffic Accidents

* Agricultural and Industrial Injury

* Life threatening medical problems

* Cardiac Arrests

* Sports related injuries

All members of LIVES are volunteers who respond in their own time to 999 calls received via East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) control. LIVES members do not receive payment for this service.

The advantage of LIVES Responders is their community based location which allows a rapid response to most emergencies. In addition to responding to emergencies, LIVES also has non-operational volunteers who assist with fund raising and co-ordination of the service. LIVES works in partnership with the Ambulance service and is a recognised leader in best practice and training for the provision of emergency care.

LIVES volunteers come from the following groups:

         * Lay Volunteers without prior medical knowledge

         * Healthcare Professionals who work within the Health Service

         * Volunteers with expertise in other areas such as fund-raising and IT

Why Does Lincolnshire need LIVES?

Lincolnshire is a vast county with many rural villages and small winding roads. During the summer months, there is a massive influx of visitors, particularly along the East Coast. This adds to the demand on health services and emergency response resources. The only effective way to provide an equal service to all residents of Lincolnshire, regardless of their location is to get community based help to victims of accidents or acute medical problems. LIVES Responders arrive within minutes, providing early patient assessment and life-saving care until the Ambulance arrives.

Saving Lives……………..

The commonest cause of premature death in the UK is coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease causes heart attacks and any victim of a heart attack is at risk of cardiac arrest.

Nationally the overall chance of survival from cardiac arrest is less than 5%. Where there is a First Responder Scheme in place, this can be increased to around 35%. For more information on Heart Attacks and care of the heart please see the bystander CPR page or visit the British Heart Foundation Website:

Road Traffic and Work Place Accidents…………….

When accidents occur on some of Lincolnshires’ notorious roads and in work places, it is time critical that help should arrive within minutes. LIVES Medics and Lone Responders who are living within local communities can be alerted immediately and arrive on scene within this critical time. Therefore, there is more chance of a positive outcome.

How effective is LIVES?

LIVES now has 98 First Responder schemes and Lone Responders up and running in Lincolnshire.  First Responders cover a 6 minute area and are trained in Basic Life Support and defibrillation. We have over 100 Medics.

This scheme now handles over 900 calls per month and has over 1600 volunteers. However our aim is to have a LIVES First Responder group and Medic in every community in Lincolnshire so your help is always needed.

To date we have saved                       LIVES through Defibrillation and countless more through the provision of Oxygen Therapy.

Types of Volunteers

All of our membership are volunteers who give up their own spare time to help in their local community. There are two types of volunteers:

·          Medics                          (Medically Qualified Professionals)

·          First Responders          (Community Volunteers with no previous medical Training)

For more information about becoming a Volunteer and our Training Programme please see the Our Volunteers section of the Website.

Patient Satisfaction

“My husband had great difficulty breathing. I was very stressed, all the people who came were wonderful, and helped us when we needed it.  I can’t speak too highly of them.”
